What is a DNA paternity test?

A legal DNA paternity test from Cellmark is a conclusive way to establish if a man is or is not the biological father of a child. Paternity testing may be required for a number of reasons:

  1. To confirm a child's paternity - for personal reasons
  2. When seeking legal custody of a child
  3. Amending a child's birth certificate
  4. In response to a claim regarding child maintenance

How do I register for testing?

You can complete your paternity test registration online or by calling our Customer Services team on 0800 036 2522. Cellmark will assist with arranging appointments for DNA samples to be taken. You can use:

  1. Our dedicated sampling service
  2. Your own GP
  3. A GP from the list we supply

At the sample collection appointment a mouth swab will be rubbed gently and painlessly on the inside of the mouth to collect a sample of cheek cells.

If you use a GP you should allow at least two days for Cellmark to deliver the DNA sampling kit and each person being sampled will need two passport-sized photographs with them to confirm their identity. However, if you elect to use Cellmark's sampling service they will have kits and forms and no photographs are required as they will be taken digitally.

How accurate is a DNA paternity test?

In the testing laboratory our scientists test DNA samples with up to 24 ‘markers’ to analyse the relationship of the alleged father and the child. This produces extremely accurate results which will either exclude the man from paternity with 100% certainty or will indicate a paternal relationship with a very high level of confidence - usually in excess of 99.9999%. When a sample from the child’s mother is also tested this allows the most conclusive type of paternity analysis available.

When you choose Cellmark you can be sure your paternity test will be carried out with the care, accuracy and precision it deserves. Every test is carried out twice using the latest DNA profiling technology to provide certainty, with accurate, high quality and reliable relationship analysis.

Should I get a paternity test?

The decision to have a paternity test should not be taken lightly. We urge you to consider all the parties involved and to decide the best course of action, particularly for the child in question. As the results of a paternity test can sometimes be unexpected and the implications far reaching we recommend that you discuss the issues and possible outcomes with a third party, either a friend or family member or an independent advice service.
