Litholink

Kidney Stone Prevention Programme

A comprehensive metabolite evaluation service that uses clinical outcome based algorithms to interpret 24 hour urine results and deliver interpretative reports giving clear recommendations for treatment.

I lived in constant, excruciating pain, with at least one stone a month for the past 20 years

Since starting the Litholink program, I have had no new kidney stones. I can’t thank my doctor and Litholink enough!

For physicians

Litholink is an integrated diagnostic testing and kidney stone disease management programme which has been used extensively in the USA, and is now being introduced into the UK.  US urologists have reported that it can help reduce the reoccurrence of kidney stones by 80%

It offers a comprehensive metabolite evaluation service that uses clinical outcome based algorithms to interpret 24 hour urine results which deliver interpretative reports that give clear recommendations for treatment.

The logistics of sample collection are handled by our UK patient services team and samples are analysed in Litholink’s US laboratory in under 10 days.

For patients

Litholink, a LabCorp subsidiary, has developed a programmatic approach to comprehensively treat kidney stone disease. Using this approach, we are able to reduce the rate of kidney stone recurrence up to 80%.

Based around a novel, convenient, 24 hour urine collection and sample return service, we can perform a number of tests and measurements to determine exactly why you are forming kidney stones.

Once a person has a kidney stone, the risk of forming another stone is high. Physicians must determine the underlying causes of kidney stone formation in order to prevent future stones from occurring. Litholink testing will provide your physician with the highest quality results possible to help prevent kidney stones from reoccurring.

  • Kidney stones

Kidney stones are found in 2-3% of people and 0.5% of people present each year with an acute episode of pain due to stones. These rates have been rising steadily since the start of the 20th century. Men are more commonly affected than women, however, after the age of 50 the sex distribution becomes equal.

Recurrence rates for stones are high (20% at 5 years, 35% at 10 years & 70% at 20 years)

At the age of 70, you have a lifetime risk of 1 in 8 for forming a stone.

Stones are responsible for more than 12,000 hospital admissions each year. Stone formation is governed by both intrinsic (heredity, age & sex) and extrinsic factors (geography, climate, water intake & diet). Poor fluid intake combined with a low-roughage, high protein diet containing a lot of refined sugar increases the risk of forming stones.

  • Why choose the Litholink programme

The programme has been designed to be both effective and easy. Backed by active research programme it is already used by many thousands of patients in the USA.

It uses a well thought out sample collection system and delivers easy to use reports featuring patient and physician-friendly graphical display of the primary stone risk factors and interpretation of lab results offering therapeutic suggestions.

Data is presenting in chronological order, clearly showing response to treatment.

An extensive range of patient education material is available.

Recent (US) government funded study shows kidney stones were the 7th most common and largest single cost of emergency room visits (not resulting in admission to hospital)

  • How it works

You can contact us direct to order a test, altough we recommend it is something you should discuss with your clinician. Your clinician will complete a form which gets sent to us. We will contact you to confirm details of where to send the collection kit.

You complete a simple at-home urine collection and the samples we collect from you will provide an accurate picture of the way you live, eat and drink from day to day.

Based on your test results, your clinician will prescribe a customized treatment plan that could include increased fluids, changes in your diet, and/or medications. It’s very important that you follow the recommended treatment.

Follow-up testing is a critical step in the path towards stone prevention. Follow-up testing ensures that your treatment is working. Generally the first follow-up test is scheduled two months after beginning treatment. Since stone prevention is a process, and our body chemistries change as we age, annual follow-up testing is important to ensure your treatment plan is still working for you.
