For Healthcare Professionals

Standard DNA Paternity or Maternity testing usually involves testing mouth swab samples from the mother, possible father and children in a contested relationship. These samples are collected at sampling apppointments at GP surgeries. However there are occasions where this is not the norm - notably when one of the parties whose DNA requires analysis is deceased.

  • If it is not possible to collect a mouth swab sample our preferred option is a blood sample taken prior to or within 24hrs of death. The sample, approx. 1ml is sufficient, should be stored in a plastic EDTA tube.
  • If this is not available and the deceased died over 24hrs ago we ask for a deep thigh muscle sample to enable us to carry out the analysis. The sample needs to be the size of a 20 pence piece and (one) 1cm thick - it is important that this is taken before embalming.

If you have a different type of sample or wish to discuss other issues concerning DNA testing in "special circumstances", please contact our Customer Services Department on 01235 528000 Monday 8.30am to 7pm and Tuesday to Friday from 8.30am to 5.30pm - or email them at info@cellmark.co.uk or use our discrete SMS service which is available during the same hours.
